Luxury Holidays

A National Park is an area of supreme natural beauty that is protected from environmental hurt and further development by law. To be considered for a National Park, the site in question has to be a minimum of 1000 hectares and contain some vital natural feature in the way of flora, fauna or geological interest. Tourists on Fuerteventura luxury holidays are well served as there are three National Parks on this island, which is the second largest of the Canary Islands. Jandia, El Jable and the wildlife friendly island of Los Lobos are the sum of Fuerteventura’s parks. No wonder then that Fuerteventura attracts so many nature-lovers.

The Samaria Gorge in south-west Crete is a major attraction for tourists, especially those on Crete luxury holidays. Although the gorge is 16km long, it can be walked in 13km ending at Agia Roumeli and the Libyan Sea.The gorge was made in 1962 with the abandoment of the ancient village of Samaria to make way for the park. As well as being a National Park, Samaria is also a biosphere reserve and was built with the intention of protecting the ancient Cretan goat or ‘kri-kri’.The rare Cretan eagle has also made its home in the Gorge which is the longest in the world. The narrow passage towards the end of the walk is known as the ‘Iron Gates’ and everywhere along the walk you will see remains of the people who used to live and work here. There are abandoned lime kilns, sheep pens and furnaces.

Those on Lanzarote luxury holidays should check out the intriguing Timanfaya National Park in the islands’ south-west. This incredible park resembles a lunar landscape with dark volcanic ash and extinct volcanoes everywhere. You can either explore the park by foot, on camel or via a 14 kilometre bus tour. The park has several artificial geyers which erupt wonderfully when water is poured into their bore-holes.
